Summary of the "CANDELA" project:

The project

The "CANDELA" project is a two year (July 2003 - June 2005) European Research Program sponsored via Eureka under the ITEA programme. More than 20 partners are involved split over 5 countries

The objectives

The goal of the "CANDELA" project is to unify Europe’s knowledge in Video Content Analysis and strengthen Europe’s position in the field of Video Content Analysis. The project outcomes enable the European industry to develop new business in this field.

To unleash the full potential of Video Content Analysis it should be researched in combination with networked delivery and storage technologies. By doing so, new algorithms for computer vision, innovative databases and high-bandwidth networks can be developed. Furthermore, advanced software agents are necessary to make rich content accessible and security mechanisms are needed to prevent unauthorised usage. Since a number of these techniques are still in their infancy, research and development in these areas is required.

The work plan

The "CANDELA" is organised along four work packages, i.e.

WP0 = Project Management

WP1 = Content Analysis

WP2 = Network DELivery

WP3 = Architecture and supporting technologies

The focus of this project is first on Content Analysis. Then, Networked Delivery is needed to enable the Applications that make the results of the content analysis accessible remotely. In order to keep the results of the project coherent, three (non symbolic) work packages have been defined, with the respective goals of Content Analysis, Networked Delivery and Architectures and Applications. Furthermore, the project management has been gathered in a separate, symbolic work package to make the reporting deliverables explicitly visible.

Expected results

The final deliverable of this project is an integrated demonstrator that will show how the three elements  of "CANDELA" (Content analyses, Networked delivery and Applications) come together.

Some industrial trials with (components of) the architecture will be held within the project to ensure practically of the various approaches and validate their effectiveness.

The "CANDELA" project will yield a set of reference designs, with which the industry can be supported.

A workshop will be organised in which the results of the project will be presented to the industry and consulting firms.
