INTERPROJECT LINKAGES

STORit has identified two projects which are of particular importance for its upstream & downstream relations:
SMASH and DICEMAN

DOWNSTREAM Delivery Chains - From AC312/STORit project to Outside

Common Area of Interest Related Projects Output towards Standardisation Bodies Related Initiatives National/
International
Possible Guidelines
Content description of stored information domain-1   DAVIC,
DVB-TM
  • Content description interface for home storage applications
  • System for generation of content descriptors for indexing audio-visual material
  • Interoperability standards for multimedia storage device in the home

UPSTREAM Delivery Chains - towards the AC312/STORit project

Common Area of Interest Related Projects Input from Standardisation Bodies Related Initiatives National/
International
Possible Guidelines
MPEG-7 DICEMAN MPEG-7 standardisation
  • Tools to assist in the creation of MPEG-7 descriptions (aimed at content providers)
  • A Reference model for the search, browsing and trading of archive material (aimed at programme producers)
STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES SMASH   DAVIC
  • User Interface models
  • experimental storage platform
  • DVB < = > PC interaction
  • Remote educational learning models

STORIT also identified some interesting projects which cover possible common areas of interest.
Our prime reason of listing these projects is that we aim to exchange ideas and investigate whether further intensified cooperation (e.g. in a delivery chain) is required.

Possible Guidelines
IE -8011 EUROgatherer     Personalized Information Gathering.
EUROgatherer will develop a personalized information gathering service based on software agent technology. The agent technology is a key point in the development of the Remote Education Application in STORIt project. Particularly interesting is the capability it will offer to create meaningful abstracts of the retrieved documents and classify them appropriately and to acquire and retain an interest profile of the user. Timing: the two project have almost parallel development timing.
LE4-8303 EuroSearch     Techniques for more Subject-Oriented Information Querying
The Eurosearch project will develop a pan-European federation of national search and categorization services. It will also develop techniques which allow for more subject-oriented querying of information via the automatic classification of Web information according to its content, and will also cross language retrieval, where a query expressed in one language can retrieve information expressed in a different language. The techniques and cross language retrieval of documents is of interest to STORit project for the development of the remote Education Application. Timing: the two project have almost parallel development timing.
domain-1     during the project in domain-1 we may encounter more projects which we have to consider for cooperation

EXPERIMENTAL FACILITIES

Several applications can make use of the STORit technologies. To fully develop and test all the issues on STORit technologies we will work on two different application areas and consider the total chain from content production to the end user. Below we briefly describe both applications and the main points we would like to address in each of them.

DVB/Internet based services

This work will focus on several aspects that are specific to this application. The situation is that the user will be offered a multitude of services via different carriers, offered by several service providers. This provides the challenge of interoperability at the users home. Furnishing this interoperability, and providing unified management in the time/space domain should be one of the prime tasks. The meta-data which is to be provided by the broadcaster or content provider will be clarified and tested in this work package. Also, the integration of information provided by Digital Broadcast and supplementary information provided on Internet needs to be studied. The study and implementation of agent software providing filtering based on user profiles will be tested in an application.

Personalised Remote Learning

This work will focus on the implementation of a prototype education/training curriculum, course, lesson and media management, and a distribution system based on the personalised needs and schedule of each student/trainee. The student/trainee will have a PC coupled to the storage system described and the course material will be delivered by tapes, optical discs (in the future) as well as by on-line connections. The mixed mode delivery of course material is an important feature for those students/trainees not having access to networks of adequate capacity. This application will investigate and apply student/trainee profiling, various student/trainee interaction techniques with the teacher/instructor, course management and administration with aspects of course storage at home. Key aspects of this work include the structuring of course material and management software, the teacher-student and student-course interaction, and the user interfaces.

For the verification of the above mentioned applications we will built some STORit prototypes which will be used to verify the STORit functions in a real consumer home environment. Possibly use will be made of currently available functional parts of the SMASH-devices.
